Checklist to Help Minimize Issues to Your North Muskegon Home While on Vacation

Hole in bathroom wall from pipe bursting This hole was caused by a frozen pipe bursting in the bathroom wall.

Vacations are meant for relaxation and zero issues.  To not interrupt that zen while away, there is a list of items that you should take care of before heading out.  Recently we were called to a house with a major water damage.  The heat went out, water pipes froze and then burst in the master bathroom and another bathroom causing a total mess throughout the whole home.  The catch is the homeowners are not sure when it happened because they are currently out of town and their daughter noticed the damages when stopping by two weeks after they left.  Check out these tips below so your North Muskegon home doesn't fall victim to any damages:

  1. Set your heating and A/C system - during the winter, set your heat to around 55 degrees to prevent frozen pipes.  During warmer months, set your A/C to about 10 degrees below the outside temperature so big appliances do not have to work extra hard.
  2. Turn off the water - if you will be gone for longer than a week, turn off your main water supply.  If you do not want to turn off all the water, make sure to close valves to your washing machine, dishwasher, ice-maker, and toilets to prevent potential leaks.
  3. Designate a point of contact - this person should stop by the home every few days to make sure no damages have happened since their last visit.  If an issue does arise, you have peace of mind that someone is there to handle the situation.
  4. Arrange for snow removal/lawn maintenance - a snowy driveway or overgrown yard is a popular sign that no one is home.  Enlist a local service or your point of contact to handle this upkeep.
  5. Move your car - park your car in the garage so it is less vulnerable to theft and out of harm's way in case of a storm.
  6. Clean your kitchen - wash your dirty dishes, clean the sink trap, pour vinegar down your garbage disposal, discard perishables from fridge and pantry, make sure the oven and stove are turned off, and lastly take out the garbage.
