Wood stove burning Safety first when using heating equipment

Winter in West Michigan means cold temperatures which leads to Michiganders using space heaters and fires to feel extra cozy in their homes.  According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), one in every seven home fires and one in every five home fire deaths involve heating equipment.  Half of all home heating fires occur in December, January, and February.  NFPA has provided a few tips to help prevent you from becoming a part of those statistics:

  • Never use your oven to heat your home.
  • Keep anything that can burn at least three-feet away from heating equipment like the furnace, fireplace, wood stove, or portable space heater.
  • Turn space heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.
  • Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional.
  • Test carbon monoxide and smoke alarms at least once a month.
  • Keep portable generators outside, away from windows, and as far away from your home as possible.
