Air mover drying out basement wall Our philosophy is restore versus replace.

Plumbing problems, a flood, or a storm can leave your home with extensive water damage.  Immediate water mitigation is necessary to minimize further damages.  This Norton Shores homeowner called SERVPRO of Muskegon after a main water pipe burst just outside of their home, flooding four rooms in their finished basement.  These chose SERVPRO for the following reasons:

  • Highly Trained Restoration Specialists - our professionals specialize in water damage restoration, with training focused on restoring salvageable items, minimizing drying time, and documenting the entire process.
  • Customer Care - our specialists care about you and your property, wanting to help you get back to normal after you have water damage to your home.  SERVPRO of Muskegon will also help you navigate the insurance claims process and coordinate the necessary paperwork for a quicker, easier, and less stressful experience.

Our professionals working on this Norton Shores home walked the talk, as you can see in the photo.  The drywall wall was still wet after multiple days of drying and needed to be removed.  They carefully removed only the affected drywall, leaving an inch of drywall on the perimeter for easy repairs.  Removing that section they were able to properly dry out the wood paneling that was behind the drywall.

Understanding the Mold Mitigation and Remediation Process

8/5/2021 (Permalink)

Mold Containments in Muskegon Home SERVPRO of Muskegon, Here to Help your mold problems.

When your Muskegon home or business experiences water intrusion, like a roof leak or a leaking water line, mold can quickly become a problem.  Mold can potentially cause significant damage to your property and can affect your health.  Fortunately, SERVPRO of Muskegon has the industry training, protective gear, and specialized equipment necessary to handle your mold problem.  Every mold damage scenario is different but the following steps illustrate a "typical" mold removal process.

  1. The mold cleanup and remediation process begins when you call SERVPRO of Muskegon.  We will ask a series of questions to help determine the necessary equipment, resources, and personnel needed for the job.
  2. At your property we will carefully inspect for signs of mold using technology designed to detect hidden water sources and will provide an estimate for the work that will be performed.
  3. Starting the job, our certified technicians will place containments to prevent the spread of mold and isolate the contaminated area with physical barriers and negative air pressure to keep mold spores from spreading during the cleanup process.
  4. Our technicians use powerful air scrubbers and HEPA vacuums to prevent the spread of mold spores while the mold remediation is in progress.
  5. The amount of mold growth and the types of surfaces on which the mold appears affects the mold remediation process.  Antifungal and antimicrobial treatments will be used to eliminate mold colonies and help prevent new colonies from forming.  Removing and disposing of mold infested porous materials, such as drywall and flooring, may be necessary to remediate heavy mold growth.
  6. SERVPRO of Muskegon can also clean furniture, curtains, and other restorable items affected by mold using a variety of cleaning techniques to clean and sanitize your items.
  7. Restoration may entail minor or major repairs depending on the level of mold damage.

Sanitizing vs. Disinfecting vs. Sterilizing

3/8/2021 (Permalink)

Person cleaning surface with blue rags in PPE Using the right products is important for the safety and health of your family.

To ordinary people, these three terms are often used interchangeably despite describing three different types of antimicrobials.  According to the EPA, antimicrobials are products that "destroy or suppress the growth of harmful microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, or fungi on inanimate objects and surfaces."

Sanitizing - describes the act of reducing bacteria on a surface.  It is commonly used in kitchens and food preparation areas, and is the weakest type of public health antimicrobial.

Disinfectants - much stronger and will kill and prevent the growth of bacteria and fungi.  Some, but not all, types of disinfectants can kill viruses like HIV, respiratory syncytial virus, and coronavirus varieties.  They are most commonly used in the medical industry and should not be used on surfaces that come in contact with food.

Sterilizers - the strongest of the antimicrobial category.  In addition to killing live fungi and bacteria, they can also reduce the spores that create new microbes.  Training and certification are usually required to handles and use these products.

Hybrids - some products are combined sanitizer and disinfectant, which are useful when you not only need to disinfect an area, but also need to clean away material and residue that provide breeding grounds for new bacteria and viruses.

At SERVPRO, we are lucky to have our own chemists on staff to develop professional-grade products such as SERVPROXIDE.  It is designed to kill harmful bacteria, viruses, and mold on hard surfaces, and is also effective for sanitizing soft surfaces.  It is formulated for everyday use because it meets the lowest toxicity rating approved by the EPA.  It may be used around children, infants, pets (dogs and cats), and food preparation.  As a consumer you are now able to purchase it on Amazon so you have confidence in the cleanliness of your home or business.

SERVPRO of Muskegon has the training and professional-grade products to get the job done right!  Call us today, 231-733-7601

Winter Weather Worries

11/27/2020 (Permalink)

Burst pipe Burst pipe from freezing temperatures

Winter weather can bring about more issues than just slippery roads and a driveway to shovel.  Living in Michigan we are at risk for frozen pipes, which can create a major disaster to your home or business.

Frozen pipes occur when exposed to cold weather, such as those outside your house, or in areas such as basements, attics, garages, or kitchen cabinets.  A frozen pipe can burst at the point where the ice blockage inside the pipe is located, but typically the rupture is caused from the backflow of pressure between the water source and the blockage.

If winter weather causes water damage to your home or business, SERVPRO of Muskegon is only a call away, (231) 733-7601!  Our IICRC Certified technicians have the knowledge, experience and equipment to restore your property "Like it never even happened."

Advanced Technology and Techniques

Desiccant Dehumidifier at a Local Church Desiccant Dehumidifier at a Local Church

We have seen major advancement in technology and techniques used in the restoration industry the past few decades.  These advancements allow SERVPRO of Muskegon professionals to restore a property back to preloss condition quickly, reliably, and more effectively.

Moisture Detection and Measurement Equipment

Scientific drying principles rely upon specialized equipment to detect, measure and monitor moisture levels.

  • Infrared cameras can help detect water through a wall, ceiling, or floor making for a more thorough water removal.
  • Sensitive moisture detectors, hygrometers, and other meters measure the extent of moisture saturation.

Water Extraction Equipment

Powerful extraction equipment speeds the drying process by removing the bulk of water from your property.

  • Submersible and gas-powered pumps for continuous pumping of high-level water.
  • Truck-mounted and portable extraction units efficiently remove water.

Drying Equipment

Industrial strength air movers and dehumidifiers are needed to remove the remaining moisture from ceiling, walls and floors.  Proper drying helps to prevent swelling and warping of floors, walls and furniture.

  • High-speed air movers prompt moisture to evaporate at a faster rate.
  • Industrial grade dehumidifiers pull the water vapor from the air.

Odor Removal and Deodorization

Fire and water damage often cause strong odors.  The machines we use remove airborne contaminants and control the air quality during the restoration and cleanup process.

  • Air scrubbers remove airborne particles and contaminants.
  • Thermal foggers and deodorization agents control odors.

Sanitizing Agents, Germicides, and Anti-Microbial Treatments

The use of OSHA-approved cleaning agents may be needed to clean and remove odors and/or contaminants on your property.

  • Deodorization products control odors from excessive moisture.
  • Disinfection products stop the growth of bacteria, fungi, mildew, and other harmful microorganisms.

September is National Preparedness Month

9/1/2020 (Permalink)

National Preparedness Month As we continue to respond to COVID-19, there is no better time to be involved this September.

Each year, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) designates September as National Preparedness Month to promote the importance of family and community disaster planning.  This year's theme is, "Disasters Don't Wait.  Make Your Plan Today."  FEMA provides easy-to-use disaster planning guidelines, while home and business owners both can take advantage of free tools like the SERVPRO READY app.  The app stores essential contact and property information electronically where it can be accessed with a mobile device in seconds if disaster strikes.  Local business owners can take an additional preparedness step by designating SERVPRO of Muskegon as their disaster mitigation and restoration provider.  Our SERVPRO professionals will conduct a no-cost assessment of the facility and assist the owner in completing a comprehensive Emergency READY Profile (ERP) to be stored in the READY app.

Ready to start your READY Profile?  Call us today, (231) 733-7601.

Coronavirus Safety

3/13/2020 (Permalink)

The World Health Organization has officially declared the Coronavirus a pandemic. In light of this situation, we have developed specific steps to assist with managing the illness. Our crew can perform a proactive cleanup that involves facility or structure cleaning and disinfection where the customer states that there is no active known threat of COVID-19 contamination or exposure. The customer will be required to acknowledge that cleaning and disinfecting will only apply to the current state of the structure and contents. The structure would not be protected from future COVID-19 contamination if an infected person was to enter and occupy the building. The CDC encourages cleaning of high-touch surfaces such as counters, tabletops, doorknobs, light switches, bathroom fixtures, toilets, phones, keyboards, tablets, and tables at a minimum. Do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or if we can help in any way.

  • Water your tree daily.
  • Keep combustible decorations at least three feet away from heat sources.

Preventing Frozen Pipes

11/4/2019 (Permalink)

The temperatures are beginning to drop below freezing, which means that frozen pipe season is upon us. Many homeowners in West Michigan fall victim to frozen pipes and experience thousands of dollars worth of damage. Here are some ways that you can prevent your pipes from freezing:

- Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing.

- Let the cold water drip from the faucet.

- Even when away, keep the heat on in your home.

- Add insulation to attics, basements, and crawl spaces.

If you do experience a frozen pipe, turn the faucet on and apply heat to the frozen section of the pipe. Continue to thaw until full water pressure is restored. If you are unable to locate the frozen area or unable to thaw the pipe, call a licensed plumber.

Gutter Cleaning Tips

10/29/2019 (Permalink)

When it comes to fall projects, cleaning your gutters should be high on the priority list. This can prevent multiple issues such as roof leaks and broken gutters from frozen water. Here are some tips for cleaning your gutters:

1. Always make sure that your ladder is placed on a sturdy surface.

2. Wear the appropriate attire since cleaning gutters is a dirty job.

3. Use the right tool for the job. A small, plastic gutter scoop often works best. A child's sandbox shovel or old plastic kitchen spatula are good alternatives.

4. Spread a tarp underneath your workspace to collect the gunk that you remove from the gutters.

5. Once the debris has been removed, use a garden hose to flush the gutters and downspouts.

6. Repair any sagging metal.

These tips will help your gutters be winter ready!

Emergency Ready Profile

10/7/2019 (Permalink)

When it comes to commercial facilities, many individuals do not realize how important it is to be aware of where your utility shutoffs are. If you have never experienced a broken pipe, gas leak, electrical malfunction, or more, knowledge of your utility shutoffs might not be very high on the priority list. When something does occur, minutes can easily turn into thousands of dollars of damage. To ensure that our customers are prepared for what might happen, we create complimentary Emergency Ready Profiles. This free service is a tool that will house all the important information about your facility. A representative from our franchise will come in and take pictures of your utility shutoffs, write down locations, collect vendor information, and more to all be housed in an online profile. This profile can be accessed via desktop computer, laptop, mobile app (iPhone & Android), and even printed off. If you are interested in this free service for your business, give us a call at:

Although we do not like to think about it, we need to understand that anything could happen to our home or business at any given moment. Do you have quick access to contractor contact information? Oh Christmas Tree

11/26/2018 (Permalink)

Christmas tree season is upon us!

Most people begin setting dates to shop for their tree shortly after Thanksgiving. The tree farms grow busier and busier, and you begin seeing trees on top of cars going down the road. The local supermarkets have shelves packed full of lights and holiday music is in the air.

Christmas trees, although festive and pretty, bring along some extreme dangers. It is not uncommon during the holiday season for families to experience Christmas tree fires. Here are some tips on how to avoid these disasters:

- Always re-cut the trunk at least one inch from the bottom and drill a hole in the middle to allow the tree to absorb water and stay healthy.

- Keep your tree away from heat sources. These can include space heaters, fireplaces, wood stoves, televisions, computer monitors, and more.

- Do not put too many strands of lights on your tree. The rule of thumb is a maximum of three plugs per extension cord.

- Always make sure your tree has water! A Christmas tree fire is much more likely when your tree is dry.

If you do experience a tree fire, we are here to help. Our highly trained technicians are not strangers to these kinds of situations. You can trust us to be there for you in your time of need.
